Jesus came to reveal the invisible God to an obstinate, rebellious world. John the Baptizer came to bear witness to Jesus, making a straight path for one who would come after him even though he was ‘before him.’ As followers of Jesus, we build upon these two identities of Word and witness. We go out into all the world, bearing witness to the Word, and by the grace of God we have a much fuller picture of Jesus than John the Baptizer did. We look at the way Jesus was sent into the world (his posture and purposes) and then remember his words in John 20:21, “As the Father sent me into the world, so send I you.”
