In response to King David’s intention to build God a house, God responds by saying “I will build you a house,” that is, a dynasty.  2 Samuel 7:12-17 lists four astonishing characteristics of this dynasty:

1. Time will not outlast, 2 Samuel 7:13, 16.   Unlike any other kingdom in history, it will be an eternal covenant; Psalm 89:3–4; Ezekiel 37:25.
2. Death will not stop it, 2 Samuel 7:12.  The promise will be fulfilled, even after David’s death and the death of his sons and their sons.
3. The old priesthood will not mediate it, 2 Samuel 7:14a.  There will be a unique son of the father who will mediate this new covenant, but who also will be a priest from a superior priesthood.  Psalm 110:4 indicates that this future son will be a priest forever after the order of the priestly line of Melchizedek, Psalm 110:4; Hebrews 7:1-28.
4. Sin will not disrupt it, 2 Samuel 7:14b.  The covenant will continue due to God's faithfulness with David, even after Solomon's sin; 1 Kings 11:12-13.  Ultimately, Jesus, the son of David, was David’s greater son who will usher in his eternal kingdom. He will even take upon himself the sin of humanity, be publicly chastised by the Father, and exchange it for his righteousness to those who believe by faith; 2 Corinthians 5:21.
