Passage: Nahum 1:1– 3:19

Listen to sermon on Apple Podcasts

Though Jonah is not a part of the story, the small book of the prophet Nahum is a sequel to Jonah. Written about 150 years after Jonah, Nahum forecasts the inevitable judgment of God upon the violent and oppressive Assyrian empire and its capital city, Nineveh.  At the same time, Nahum, whose name means “consolation,“ delivers a message of hope and comfort to the people of God.  Nahum addresses the question of how a loving and faithful God does not violate his holy and true character in judgment.

Discussion Questions:

  1. How is the jealousy of God described in 1:2 positively understood?
  2. How does giving God first place in our lives ultimately result in our best ?
  3. How does Nahum demonstrate the reality that, even in the midst of God’s judgment, we can experience his comfort and consolation?
