John 6 - Where else would we go?
Scripture:
After this many of his disciples turned back and no longer walked with him. So Jesus said to the Twelve, “Do you want to go away as well?” Simon Peter answered him, “Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life, and we have believed, and have come to know, that you are the Holy One of God.”
(John 6:66-69 ESV)
Observation:
In the Christian life, we will face difficult things. There are doctrines that are enough to melt the mind, theological complexities to great for us, calls to obedience from our savior that seem to stretch the limits of the possible, and, of course, the devastating realities of life and death. In trying moments following obedience, we will wonder, "Is this all worth it?" When we learn something difficult about God or about our world, we may be tempted to say, "Do I really want to believe that?" When we stare death in the face after a loved one passes away, we may think, "God, where were you? Don't you care at all?"
In those moments, when all seems difficult and trying, we must remember a solid truth: “Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life, and we have believed, and have come to know, that you are the Holy One of God.”
Life is difficult, and God is complex, but the gospel is simple... and it is enough.
