John 20 - That you may have life

Scripture:

Now Jesus did many other signs in the presence of the disciples, which are not written in this book; but these are written so that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name. (John 20:30-31 ESV)

Observation:

John has been very selective regarding which of Jesus' miracles he highlighted in his gospel. Certainly there are numerous theories and views as to why he chose exactly which miracles and what they were designed to present. Here, however, John gets down to the nitty gritty - at the end of the day, John has explained these things so that we may BELIEVE that Jesus is the promised Savior and BY BELIEVING we may HAVE LIFE.

Jesus isn't about morals. He isn't about ethics. He isn't about social action. This isn't about comforting us after we've had a bad day. The pages in the Bible aren't primarily about proving an argument, a historical reality, or a philosophy. It isn't about a particular theological system. It's not about baptist vs. presbyterian vs. non-denominational.

It's about heaven and hell. It's about life and death. It's about living forever with our Creator or dying forever separated from him. It is serious. Eternal life is free for all who believe, but it came at a high price - the very lifeblood of God.

Application:

Never, ever diminish the gospel to be about something besides eternal life found only in the Son of God.

Prayer:

Lord, may I always give your gospel the treatment that it deserves. May I never make you into anything other than the King of kings, the Lord of lords, the Great I AM, the one and only Savior of the world.
