John 1 - From Rejection to Reception

Scripture: John 1:1-18 Summary

Jesus, the visible image of the invisible God, is, in fact, God. The world was made by him - all of it. He is the source of life. There is no life outside of him. He is the true light, and although the world tries, it cannot and has not overshadowed him. Although all of this is true, the world didn’t receive Jesus with open arms, but with rejection. Those that do receive him, however, are given a miraculous gift: they are adopted into the family of God.

Observations on the Passage:

It’s hard for me to imagine the heartbreak that God has experienced. He is the Creator of all yet his creation doesn’t acknowledge him. He went to his own people, yet they received him not. He stepped into the darkness, but rather than having the captives rejoice, they shielded their eyes. He came to give life and was executed for it.

Application for me:

I wonder how many times I reject God in my everyday life. How many times do I ignore his prompting? How many times does God try to pull my heart in a direction and I push it away as a passing thought? How often has God tried to woo me, to reveal his glory to me, to show me a glimmer of his marvelous light, but I have been too busy, too preoccupied, or too expectant of something else? How desperate I am to learn to slow down - to open my eyes and to see the glory of Christ.

Prayer:

Lord, over the next 21 days, please help me and the people of Revolve to learn to receive you rather than to reject you. I pray that we would see you for who you are - the Creator of All Things - and stare at you with wide-eyed wonder. Transform our hearts from rejection to reception.
